A Tribute to Michael Jackson on his 54th BirthdayMichael Jackson has been one of the biggest pop stars of the 80’s. Born on 29th August in 1958 in Gary, Indiana has entertained his audiences for his whole life. He belonged to African – American working class family and was the eighth of ten children. He has a troubled relationship with his father Joe. As a boy he was regularly whipped and this even his father acknowledged in the year 2003. However, Jackson also credits his father’s strict discipline that played an important role for his success. He has openly mentioned about his troubled relationship with his father in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. He often cried from loneliness and even the sight of his father made him vomit. Jackson’s father on numerous occasions would verbally abuse him about his looks saying that he had a fat nose. It is due to this, that he developed a deep dissatisfaction with his appearance and developed nightmares and chronic sleep problems.

At the age of 8, Jackson shared the lead vocals with his elder brother Jermaine. And, the group was called The Jackson 5. The band toured extensively from 1966 to 1968 performing frequently at the black clubs. He began his solo career in 1971 and by 1980’s he was the dominant figure in music. The music videos for his songs “Beat it,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller” have been credited for breaking down the racial barriers and transforming the medium to an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos has helped to accredit the new Television channel MTV to fame.

In May, 1984 he was invited to the White House to receive an award from the President Ronald Reagan for his immense support to charities that further helped people to overcome alcohol and drug abuse. He also co-wrote the charity single “We are the World” in 1985 Lionel Riche that was released worldwide to aid the poor.

In 1982, Jackson contributed to the song “Someone in the Dark” to the storybook for the film E.T the Extra – Terrestrial and it won a Grammy award for the best recording for children in 1984. In the same year he won seven Grammys and eight American Music awards

Jackson’s skin had been medium brown colour for his entire youth, however starting in mid 1980’s it grew much paler. And, this change gained much widespread media coverage especially with rumours of him bleaching his skin.

By the mid 1990s a lot of surgeons had speculated that he has undergone facial surgeries like for the nose, thinned lips, cheekbone surgery and a forehead lift. However, Jackson denied it all and insisted that he only had a nose surgery. In the early 1980s, he lost a lot of weight due to a change in his diet for the desire to have a dancer’s body. We can never forget his famous moonwalk. In the later years of his life he was involved in a lot many controversies. Plus, he suffered a severe addiction to drugs during the last 15 years of his life and that was probably one of the reasons for his early death.

On June 25, 2009 Michael Jackson died when he was in bed at his rental mansion at 100 North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills district of Los Angeles. He has been one of the biggest music legends and will always be remembered as a musical king of the world. Today is his 54th birthday and we pray the almighty that his soul rests in peace.
