BB Creams – The beauty industry superheroes

BB creamThe only way you would not have heard about BB Creams is if you live under a rock in Antarctica that is buried under layers and layers of snow and ice. Till last year, however, most of us in the UK were exactly in that situation. If someone had asked me about a BB Cream last spring, I would retorted with either a blank face or a “BB what?” However, in the span of just a year, things have changed drastically and the beauty product has actually proved to be the sensation it had promised to be.

Though the concept is new to us, it has been lurking under our noses since the 1950s. The Blemish Balm (BB) concept was conceptualised by German dermatologist Dr Christine Schrammek to help her laser skin surgery patients heal better and faster. The cream that she created had soothing and skin regenerating properties that protected skin as well as covered red patches.

Later, Dr Schrammek commercialised the formula and such creams found a huge market in Asian countries, especially South Korea. Here, women swear by it and have been using it for that flawless glow for almost a decade now. About time these miracle creams came home, thought the Europeans. As a result, a whole tidal wave of BBs hit us last year.

Containing hyaluronic acid, glycerine and Vit C, BB Creams brighten skin tone and the light reflecting ingredients come together to conceal minor flaws and blemishes as well as leave users with an even skin tone. If you are new to the creams, all the information on what they are supposed to do might leave you baffled and sceptical. After all, is it really possible for one cream to work like a primer, tinted moisturiser, concealer, day cream, and illuminator and also offer sun protection?

If there ever was a beauty miracle, it would have to be the BB concept as yes, these creams actually deliver what they promise.

How does one decide which BB Cream would suit them? The best way would be to try out a sampler and keep it on for the entire day to see how it fares to different trying moments throughout the day. Among the many options available now, my favourites are:

MAC Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF35

Garnier B.B. Cream Miracle Skin Perfector

Clinique Age Defence BB Cream SPF30

No.7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream

Dior Snow White Reveal UV Protection BB Cream
